As we approach the Easter season, we’re reminded of the cross, where our sins were forgiven and our salvation was purchased. In this series we’ll probe the power-and message of the cross, together with the overwhelming love that Christ displayed at Calvary and beyond.
It’s in the cross that we learn what Christ’s sacrifice meant for the eternal destiny-of all of us. In the cross is a message for each of us–a message of eternal life given freely, a message of perfect love with no end, a message of glorious hope attained at great cost, and a message of a divine power that exists beyond the limitations of all flesh that has conquered the powers of hell for the sake of us all.
Calvary is not only the essence of Jesus’ ministry to humankind. It is the heart of Christianity. It should also be at the center of our lives as Christians. This series of messages will explore the biblical writers’ words about the cross, revealing not only the meaning of Calvary, but the heart of God. It will also provide a richer understanding of the amazing love that drove Jesus there and of what His death accomplished. Never again will the meaning of the cross seem blurry. The cross will instead serve as a vivid reminder of our desperate need for redemption and of the inexhaustible love that won it for us.
When we approach the cross, our prayer should be: I want to get lost in the shadow of the cross – to answer the call to surrender everything in its shadow. I want to live this day with a humble heart that’s ready to pay whatever it costs to lose myself in the shadow of the cross.
