3 KEY TERMS THAT DESCRIBE THE CROSS

Mario Arindaeng 03/03/2010

This week Mario continued teaching through our prohecies study titled "Living Wisely:Expecting the Future". The Junior High studied various Scripture and looked at 3 Key Terms That Describe The Cross. The following are teaching notes from the lesson. Feel free to seek out opportunities to continue discussing and teaching these truths with the students, remembering to seek all wisdom and knowledge from the Word of God by His Holy Spirit.

The cross is the moment in history when Jesus died for the sins of the world.

Term # 1 LOVE– God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die for our sins (John 3:16; I John 3:16; Romans 5:8)

Term # 2 JUSTICE - God’s righteous judgment assigning rewards and punishments. (Romans 3:19-26, Isaiah 53: )

Term # 3 RECONCILIATION – the total, complete and full restoration of a right relationship between God and man through the Lord Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:19-23)

Study Questions

1. How is God’s love (agape) love different than every other kind of love?
2. If God gave us what we deserve, what is it we deserve?
3. How is justice carried out at the cross?
4. How do you define reconciliation? Why is reconciliation important?
5. Read 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. Since Christ reconciled us, what should we be doing for others?

THE TRUTH ABOUT HELL

Mario Arindaeng 02/24/2010

God didn’t create men for hell, but for a relationship with Him!

"Say to them, 'As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?' Ezekiel 33:11

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Truth # 1 Hell is a real place of TORMENT

Characteristics about hell:

1. Eternal fire or burning
"If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. Matthew 18:8

"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41

"In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. Jude 1:7

2. Eternal torment
And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name." Revelation 14:11

3. Eternal punishment
"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matthew 25:46

4. Degrees of punishment
"Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.  But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.  And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." Matthew 11:21-24

"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12:47-48

5. Wrath of God
But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. Romans 2:5

6. Eternal Separation from the presence of God
They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power 2 Thessalonians 1:9

7. Outer Darkness
But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." Matthew 8:12

"Then the king told the attendants, 'Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' Matthew 22:13

And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' Matthew 25:30

Truth # 2 Hell is FINAL
Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, Hebrews 9:27

Truth # 3 Hell is ETERNAL
"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matthew 25:46

"And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind." Isaiah 66:24

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where "'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.' Everyone will be salted with fire. Mark 9:43-48

BIBLICAL DEFINTIONS OF “HEAVEN”

When you read the Bible, “heaven” does not always refer to the place where all believers go when they physically die. In fact, there are four different usages found in the Bible. So when you see the word “heaven” in the Bible, think about which meaning is implied. Match the verses with the definitions for heaven. Each definition for heaven will be used three times.

A. “heaven” as in the six mile atmosphere of the earth
B. “heaven” as in the whole universe (sun, moon, stars, galaxies, etc)
C. “heaven” as synonym for God
D. “heaven” as in the dwelling place of God

____Matthew 6:9 "This, then, is how you should pray: " 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

____ Genesis 1:14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years,

____ Psalm 33:6 By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.

____ Genesis1:20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

____ John 3:27 To this John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.

____Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

____ Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

____ Luke 15:18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. Luke 15:21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

____ 1 Samuel 2:10 those who oppose the Lord will be shattered. He will thunder against them from heaven; the Lord will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

____ Matthew 21:25 John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'

____ John 14:2-3 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

____ Deut. 33:13 About Joseph he said: "May the Lord bless his land with the precious dew from heaven above and with the deep waters that lie below;

FOUR REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD LOOK FORWARD TO HEAVEN

Reason 1 Heaven will be the most beautiful place you will ever live (2 Peter 3:11-13, Revelation 21:1-2)

Reason 2 Heaven radiates the glory and presence of God
(Exodus 13 :12-23; Revelation 21:11, 23)

Reason 3 Heaven is where we will have perfect bodies
(Philippians 3:20-21, I John 3:2)

Reason 4 We are going to have a blast enjoying heaven
We will be doing the following things in heaven:

A. REST– (Hebrews 4:9-11)
B. WORSHIP - (Revelation 19:1-4; Romans 12:1-2)
C. SERVICE – (I Corinthians 6:2-3; Revelation 5:10; 22:3)
D. COMMUNITY -(John 14:1-4)
E. REWARDS - (I Corinthians 3:10-15; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 4:10)
F. Intimate Personal FELLOWSHIP with God (Revelation 21:3)

FAMILY TIME
1. Share your name and the most beautiful place that you have ever been.
2. What do people who don’t know what the Bible says think heaven is like?
3. Why should we look forward to heaven?
4. How should the reality of heaven motivate us to live? In other words, what should we do because we know what heaven is going to be like?

(Read 2 Peter 3:11-13 – answer- “live holy and godly lives”) – what does that mean?
Also we should share the gospel with others.

5. Who is one person that you know that you could pray to share the e gospel with this week? (Pray for them, pursue the relationship and a spiritual conversation, persuade them to trust in Jesus)
6. Share prayer requests and pray together

4 TRUTHS ABOUT DEATH

TRUTH # 1 Everyone will die

Body and soul separate at death

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. James 2:26

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28

The Believer: spirit goes to be with Jesus, body stays in the ground until the rapture.
While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Acts 7:59

Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last. Luke 23:46

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. [22] If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! [23] I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; Philip. 1:21-23

We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:8

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- [52] in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. [53] For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. [54] When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 1 Cor. 15:51-54

The Unbeliever: spirit goes to Hades, and body goes to death (in ground) until the white throne judgment
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. [12] And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. [13] The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. [14] Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. [15] If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Rev. 20:11-15

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, Hebrews 9:27

TRUTH # 2 Death is the consequence of sin

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned” Romans 5:12

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Cor. 15:22

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

TRUTH # 3 We all live in an eternal state after death

"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. [20] At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores [21] and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. [23] In hell, (Hades) where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. [24] So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' [25] "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. [26] And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' [27] "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, [28] for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' [29] "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' [30] " 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' [31] "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' " Luke 16:19-31

How our personality continues after we leave this earth

1. Personal knowledge Continues – “I have 5 brothers” In heaven, we will not know less but more

2. Personal love Continues – This rich man was concerned about his brothers, so much, that he was willing to never see them again if only they would not join him in this place of torment. Any loved ones who have died loves you with an even sweeter, fonder purer love. Chet Bitterman a missionary said after one of his sons was killed by guerillas – “We have eight children. And they are all living: one’s in heaven and seven are on earth.” There is no evidence that they can see us on earth though that might be possible. It is more likely that they can ask for regular updates. 7 Years old girl asked if we could ask Jesus to give a message to grampa. Those in heaven, however, can not communicate with us.

3. Personal feelings

---A. Joy

You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:11

---B. Sorrow
For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Rev. 7:17

He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Rev. 21:4

---C. Desire for justice
When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. [10] They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?" Rev. 6:9-10

4. Personal activity (We will help judge the word)
Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? [3] Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 1 Cor. 6:2-3

Truth # 4 Jesus Christ conquered sin and death

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" [56] The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. [57] But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 15:55-57

I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. Rev. 1:18

Biblical Metaphors for Death

Departure
appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Luke 9:31

Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?"
Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." John 13:36

A Restful Sleep
Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep." Luke 8:52

After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up." John 11:11

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed-- 1 Cor. 15:51

A Collapsing Tent
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 Cor. 5:1

A Sailing Ship
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. 2 Tim. 4:6

A permanent home
In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. John 14:2-3

Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. [7] We live by faith, not by sight. [8] We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Cor. 5:6-8
