Running from God

Part 1

Jonah 1:1-3

“Running from God”

Our story begins with the main character being called by God to a special mission. But instead of following God’s clear command, Jonah runs from God. What would cause a prophet like Jonah to run from God? What causes us to run from God?

The answer to both questions is the same: we don’t like the plans God has for us. So just like Jonah, we run from God. We think that if we can distance ourselves from His commands and plans, we’ll be better off. WRONG!!!!

Today, we learn from a man who found out that no matter who you are or where you find yourself, God’s commands are to be obeyed, regardless of our feelings.

Our tendency to run from God is remedied by:

1. Recognizing our similarities to a certain man who was called by God.

These similarities involve:

Our common backgrounds.
The baggage we all carry.
Our belligerence towards God.

2. Responding biblically to the clear mandate that God gives.

This mandate calls us to:

Action.
Engage in a particular activity.
Stand against sin.

God’s commands are to be obeyed, no matter how difficult or dangerous they may be.

3. Realizing the trouble that can result from our miscalculations about God.

These miscalculations:

Are deliberate.
Come as a result of being deceived.
May bring God’s discipline.

Divorce and Remarriage

A Life in Focus - Part 5

“Divorce and Remarriage”

Matthew 19:1-9; 1 Corinthians 7:10-16

To have a biblical view of divorce and remarriage we must:

1. Recall a confrontation surrounding divorce.

This confrontation involved:

A challenge.
The culture of the times.
A celebration of marriage.
The real cause for divorce.
2. Recognize the Bible’s teaching about divorce and remarriage in certain specific contexts.

Paul addresses two specific kinds of situations:

The messed-up marriage.
The spiritually mixed marriage.
3. Review the circumstances that allow for remarriage.

The Bible allows for remarriage in the following three circumstances:

Death of a spouse.
Desertion by an unbelieving spouse.
Destruction of the marriage bond through adultery.
Points to Ponder:

For those who are divorced
For those married
For all

The Single Life: Single and Focused

Part 4

The Single Life

“Single and Focused”

1 Corinthians 7:7-8, 26-40

Four common myths:

Marriage is the only God-ordained lifestyle.
The grass is greener for those who are married.
My life + someone else = happiness.
Singleness produces loneliness, while marriage brings intimacy.
In light of these myths, it is imperative that we understand:

  1. How the Bible defines the single life.

   There are two categories of singles:

Those single by circumstance.
Those single by choice.
  2. How the Bible defends the single life.

   Our text reminds us that singleness is:

Allowable.
Acceptable.
  3. The possible dangers to living as a single.

   These include:

Sexual sin.
Seclusion.
Self-centeredness.
  4. The biblical duties for God’s people.

   For singles:

Remember and utilize the advantages of being single.
Realize that no matter your marital status, you are complete in Christ.
Recognize that you are an important part of the family of God.
   For the rest:

Accept unconditionally those who are single.
Don’t assume that singles want to be separate from others.
   For all:

Show affection to one another

Marriage: God's Design for Marriage

Part 3

Marriage

“God’s Design for Marriage”

1 Corinthians 7:1-6

God’s design involves:

1. Elevating marriage to be a special relationship.

Paul speaks about:

An attack that destroys.
An awareness that must be developed.
2. Experiencing marriage as a spiritual relationship.

This means that we must, as a couple:

Commit to spiritual matters.
Communicate spiritual matters.
3. Enjoying marriage as a satisfying relationship.

While discussing this satisfaction, Paul addresses both:

The waiting.
The wedded.

Marriage: From Gridlock to Wedlock

Part 2

Marriage

“From Gridlock to Wedlock”

               Ephesians 5:22-33

If couples want to experience God’s blessings:

1. Both spouses must commit to God’s plan for the home.

This plan calls spouses to be:

Certain of their salvation.
Cleansed from any sin.
Controlled by the Spirit.
Committed to their spouse.
2. Men must cultivate godly priorities for husbands.

These priorities involve being:

Leaders
Lovers
Laborers
3. Women must celebrate the godly position of being helpmates.

This position involves a proper:

Role
Respect
Realization

Parenting: The World's Greatest Job

Part 1

Parenting

“The World’s Greatest Job”

Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Successful Parents:

1.  Live the right way.

          This involves a proper:

·   Reverence

·   Response

2.  Love the right way.

           This means God must be our:

·   Focus

·   Fixation

        3.  Lead the right way

            Parents are called to:

·   Store up God’s truth.

·   Share God’s truth.

               This is done by:

Calling your children to obedience.

Comforting your children with your love.

Challenging your children to be Christlike.

Points to Ponder:

_______________________________________________________

Children:

Are designed by God.
Are different from each other.
Are sometimes disobedient.
Must be disciplined.

The Peace of the Cross

The Peace of the Cross
Part 6
Colossian 1:20-21

We experience peace when:
1. We remember the reasons we need it.
The reasons include:
•	The testimony of the scriptures
•	Our troubled consciences
•	The turmoil in our relationships with others
2. We receive the reconciliation that brings it.
This reconciliation:
•	Involves a process between God and people.
•	Required a punishment on the cross.
•	Pleased God.
3. We respond by reflecting the peace of the cross to others.
To do so:
•	Is a mark of Christianity.
• Requires a certain mindset toward others.
•	Involves us in a ministry of peace.

The Power of the Cross

The Power of the Cross
Part 4
1 Corinthians 1:17-25

The cross is powerful because it contains a:
•1.      Saving Message

  In response to this message:

Some dismiss it as absurd.
Some embrace it as the answer.
•2.      Simple Message

  In light of its simplicity:

Human wisdom denies it.
God's wisdom is displayed in it.
•3.    Separating Message

   The gospel separates people into 2 categories:

Those who reject it.
Those who respond to it.

The Necessity of the Cross

The Necessity of the Cross
Part 1
Acts 2:23
Jesus died on the cross because:
1. His death had been determined from eternity past in accordance with the infinite wisdom of God.
The death of Jesus was not ultimately the result of a sinister plot by men.

It took place rather in fulfillment of the sovereign plan of God.

2. His death had been declared in advance in the Word of God.
3. He was dedicated to fulfilling the work of God.
4. We disobeyed the will of God.

Personal Application:
Whenever all looks chaotic, remember that God is in control.
When everyone seems to have the right answer, commit to do whatever the Lord commands.
When you look at the cross, recognize that you are the cause of Christ's suffering.

The Verdict (Romans 2)

Hypocrite Part 3: The Verdict
Romans 2:11-16

Paul declares three truths regarding God’s judgment:

1.	It is impartial (v. 11).
2.	It involves the informed (vv. 12-13).
3.	It involves the ignorant (vv. 14-15).

Application:
• Recommit yourself to the Great Commission.
• Remember that no one is beyond salvation.
• Be real with God and others now instead of later.
• Reclaim your conscience by holding it captive to scripture.

The People's Court - God's Edition (Romans 2)

The People's Court - God's Edition
Romans 2:4-10
In God's court:

     1.     His judgment is promised.

             The Bible speaks about:

                 •   A date in time
                  •  A description of events

    2.     His judgment is personal.

           This means you are judged:

                •  All by yourself
                • According to what you have done

     3. His judgment is particular.

         This judgment will evaluate:

              •  The self-centered life
              •  The Savior-centered life

     4. His judgment is done without partiality.

         This means that your:

               •  Associations won't help you
               •  Affirmations won't help you
               •  Actions won't help you

Who Are You to Judge? (Romans 2)

Who Are You to Judge?

Romans 2:1-4

The story of Joseph teaches us important lessons about obedience.

Our text says:

1.     Don't delight in inexcusably judging others (v. 1).

Our judging is usually:

Unwarranted
Unfair
Unbalanced
2. Don't dismiss the inescapable judgment of God (vv. 2-3).

God's judgment is:

Perfect
Not punitive in nature.
Promised.
3. Don't despise the incredible journey back to God (v. 4).

Three words that Paul uses speak of:

God's dedication to humanity.
God's delayed wrath.
The duration of time.

What It Means to Be a Pro-Life Christian

"What It Means to Be a Pro-life Christian"

It is the duty of every Christian to provide for the orphaned, the needy, the abused, the aged, the helpless, and the sick. We should both speak on behalf of the unborn and contend for the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death.

Being a pro-life Christian involves:

1. Exalting the preeminence of our Lord.

Our failure to do this leads to:
    Strife
    Selfishness

The only remedy for strife and selfishness is:
    Submission

2. Embracing a priority for all life.

This priority involves:
    The unborn
    The underprivileged

But we must also not forget:
    The elderly
    The exploited

3. Engaging biblically within the political landscape.

This engagement should involve:
    Proclaiming Christ to the nations.
    Praying for and petitioning our civic leaders.
    Promoting initiatives that support life.

How to Live Successfully

How to Live Successfully
Matthew 25:14-30

Our text should be understood at two levels.

Level 1:  Our Address

Key ingredients:

   Money (verse 15)
   Ability (verse 15)
   Share (verses 20-23)
   Failed (verses 24-30)

Ephesians 5:15-16: Be very careful how you live....making the most of every opportunity.

1 Peter 4:10: Each one of you should use whatever gift he has received.

Level 2: The Kingdom of God

2 Corinthians 5:10: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

1 Corinthians 3:13: If he build on the foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, straw his work will be shown for what it is, because the day will bring it to light. If what he has built survives he will receive his reward, if burned up he will suffer loss.

What riches does King Jesus want us to multiply for His sake?

This week I commit to being successful with Jesus, for Jesus, on Jesus' terms by _____________________________________.

Chapter 3

It's All about Jesus!!!

Luke 2:1-20

Christmas becomes all about Jesus when we:

1. Recognize the fulfilled prophecy of Christmas.

        Bethlehem was a place

Prophesied in the Scriptures.
Of powerful symbolism.
2. Remember the famous proclamation of Christmas.

       The message of Christmas is:

Peaceful.
Positive.
Personal.
Purposeful.
3. Respond with faith-filled practices during Christmas.

       These practices involve our:

Witness.
Wonder.
Worship.

Not Just an Average Joe

My Christmas Story

"Not Just an Average Joe"

Matthew 1:18-24

Chapter 2

The story of Joseph teaches us important lessons about obedience.

Lesson #1

We must obey in spite of our current dilemmas.

Dilemmas can cause our

Hopes to crumble.
Hearts to be crushed.
Lesson #2

We must obey even if it means a change in direction.

Joseph changed his direction based on an

Angelic word.
Ancient word.
Lesson #3

We must obey by being committed to making godly decisions.

This commitment involves:

Our response to God's commands.
Our regard for other people.

A Mother's Joy - A Guide to Finding Joy This Christmas

Chapter 1
A Mother’s Joy
“A Guide to Finding Joy This Christmas”
Luke 1:26-55

The story of Mary’s encounter with Gabriel reminds us that:

    1. Christmas is a time for a gracious announcement.

        This announcement involves a:
               •	personal messenger.
               •	particular message.

    2. Christmas is a time for great astonishment.

         This astonishment:

               •	Impacts the recipient.
               •	Produces a response.

     3. Christmas is a time for godly action.

         Our active response to God’s calling involves a:

              •	Journey filled with unknowns.
              •	Joy that is unexplainable.

Fearlessness in Suffering

A Study of Paul's Conversion

Part 8

Acts 9:23-31

"Fearlessness in Suffering"

"The ‘essence' of persecution consists in ‘subjecting a person to injury or disadvantage on account of his opinions.' It is something more than meeting his opinions by argument, which is always right and proper; it is inflicting some injury on him; depriving him of some privilege, or right; subjecting him to some disadvantage, or placing him in less favorable circumstances, on account of his sentiments." -- Albert Barnes

•1.     The reality of persecution.

•2.     The reasons for persecution.

Persecution:

•a. Is the destiny of many Christians.

•b. Happens because of our doctrine.

•c. Is a sinful response to Christ-like dedication.

•3. The varied reactions to persecution.

Acts 9 describes three common reactions:

•a. We can become fearful of trusting others.

•b. New friendships can be created.

•c. Our fearlessness can grow in spite of opposition.

•4.     The results of persecution.

Positive results can include:

•a.     Enjoying times of peace.

•b.     Experiencing empowered ministry.

•c.      Seeing explosive growth.

Negative results can include:

•a.     Extreme pain and suffering.

•b. The end of our life.

•5. The biblical response to persecution.

1 Peter 3:13-17 suggests five ways in which we ought to respond to persecution. We should:

•a.     Cheer up.

•b.     Buck up.

•c.      Lift up.

•d.     Speak up.

•e.     Shape up.

Fervency in Speech

A Study of Paul's Conversion

Part 6

Acts 9:20-22

"Fervency of Speech"

"Evangelism is the spontaneous overflow of a glad and free heart in Jesus Christ." Robert Munger

"The salvation of a single soul is more important than the production or preservation of all the epics and tragedies in the world. " C.S. Lewis

"To call a man evangelical who is not evangelistic is an utter contradiction." G. Campbell Morgan

Immediately after Saul surrendered to Christ he embarked on a lifelong pursuit to proclaim the good news about the Savior who sought him out and made him His son. All who have experienced this life change should devote themselves to winning others with the life changing gospel of Jesus Christ

To make this a reality:

1. We must meet God's proclamation criteria.

Every gospel messenger must:

    * Have experienced salvation
    * Be ready and willing to serve
    * Know the scriptures
    * Know what they are going to say

2. We must deliver the proper content.

The gospel message:

    * Must focus on the Savior
    * Means our journey of faith must be secondary

3. We must prepare for the challenges.

Some challenges we may face:

    * Our past causes us problems
    * Yesterday's power isn't enough
    * Proclaiming Christ takes guts
    * Proving Christ to others is a process
    * Persecution is inevitable

Acts 9:17-19

"Fellowship with the Saints"

Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord - Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here - has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.

Our fellowship must involve:

The Filling of the Spirit

A Study of Paul's Conversion

Part 5

Acts 9:17

"The Filling of the Spirit"

To fully understand the Spirit-filled life,

we must answer three key questions.

1. What are Paul's reasons for being Spirit-filled?

Paul's command reminds us that we must:

· Be controlled by the Spirit.

· Be connected to the Spirit.

· Comply with the Spirit's leading.

·         Be complete in Christ.

2. What are the personal requirements for being Spirit-filled?

The Spirit-filled life requires:

    * Conversion by the Spirit.
    * Confession of sin.
    * Commitment to submit.

This commitment:

    * Is to a person.
    * Reflects our position.
    * Should change our priorities.

3. What are some practical results of being Spirit-filled?

The Spirit-filled life can positively affect our:

    * Worship.
    * Life after the wedding.
    * Family's well-being.
    * Work.
    * War with sin.
    * Witness to the world.

Faithful Service

A Study of Paul's Conversion

Part 4

Acts 9:10-17

"Faithful Service"

A Life of Faithful Service:

1. Starts with knowing our part in God's strategy.

Knowing our part requires that we:

    * Live for God.
    * Listen to God.

2. Is stunted by our propensity to become skeptical.

Skepticism comes when:

    * God's course for us is unique.
    * Our concerns are understandable.
    * God's conclusion seems too unbelievable.

3. Showcases the incredible potential of a Spirit-led life.

Living by the Spirit allows us to:

    * Respond with the proper action.
    * React to our enemies with affection.
    * Experience results that are amazing.

Fervent Supplication

A Study of Paul's Conversion

Part 3

Acts 9:10-12

"Fervent Supplication"

Saul's conversion reminds us that:

One of the marks of truly born-again, saved individuals is prayer. Prayer is not just a requirement; prayer is a necessary response to salvation.

Prayer is not something Christians should have to be begged to do. If people are really born again, they will pray.

Of course, Christians need to be encouraged to pray more than they do, but the authenticity of people's faith can be determined on the basis of their fervor in supplication.

If this is true, then all Christians must:

1. Remember God's announcement about prayer.

This announcement reminds us that:

    * Prayer is necessary for vibrant Christianity.
    * Prayer is noticed by God.
    * Prayer can be new even to the most religious.
    * Our prayers can seem like nonsense to others.

2. Recognize the proper attitude for prayer.

Saul's passion for prayer grew because:

    * It was an opportunity to commune with God.
    * It reminded him that God was in control.

3. Respond with prayers that apply biblical truth.

Biblical prayer:

    * Centers on the greatness of God.
    * Involves confession of sin.
    * Isn't just about our own personal concerns.

and

    * Shows our dependence.
    * Settles us in times of despair.
    * Sets us in the right direction.

Saul's example reminds us that God's answers:

    * Aren't always immediate.
    * Impact others.
    * Involve more than we know.

Your Flawed Standing

Message 1
"Your Flawed Standing"
Acts 9:1-2
Your standing is so flawed that:

1. No résumé can fix it.
Saul's résumé was lacking, no matter his:

Heritage
Hometown
Home life
Headmaster
Head knowledge
Hard work
While all of this is commendable, Saul was known for his:

Hatred
2. No amount of religious fervor can change it.

Saul's religious fervor:

Consumed his every desire.
Led him to chase every disciple.
Convinced him to destroy Christianity.
3. Only a relationship founded in Christ can transform us.
This transforming relationship:

Begins at a different place for each person.
Is initiated at a certain point in time.
Centers on a person.
Evokes a powerful response.
Points to Ponder:

No matter our posturing, we are all broken.
No matter our past, we are never beyond hope.
No matter our problems, Christ allows for new beginnings.

This judgment:

    * Involves a certain day in the future.
    * Will be characterized by God's fury.
    * Will involve an all-consuming fire.
    * Will cut down the faithless.

2. Jubilation for the saint (2-3).

Are You a Hall of Famer?

"Are You a Hall of Famer?"
Malachi 3:16-18
Part 13

A Hall of Fame life involves:

   1. A personal commitment to exalt God.

  Fearing the Lord involves the understanding that:

    * God can hurt us &
    * We can hurt God.

   2. Participation in a community that edifies others.

Community is important because:

    * God warns us against solo Christianity.
    * We wander away from God at times.
    * Other witnesses of God's grace help grow our faith.

Community involves a common:

    * Attitude
    * Activity
    * Association

3. A powerful conclusion that should encourage us.

We are encouraged because the Lord:

    * Receives us as his own.
    * Responds when we pray.
    * Regards us as His treasured possession.
    * Remembers us on the Day of Judgment.

    This mindset:

    * Reflected a fanciful notion
    * Resulted in a false statement

2. Submitting to God's will is unrewarding? (14b)

This belief comes from a wrong:

    * Assessment

3.   God's word is unreliable? (15)

Are You Robbing God?
Malachi 3:6-12
Part 11

Robbing God involves our:

    * Attitudes
    * Actions
    * Assets

If we desire to find victory in the area of giving we must:

1. Remember what God has done for us (6).

God is completely trustworthy in:

    * The promises He has made to us.
    * The plans He has for us.

2.         Return to God (7).

Our return involves:

    * Acknowledging our departure.
    * Admitting our sin.
    * Asking for His forgiveness and guidance.

3. Realize the importance of giving (8-9).

This involves understanding:

    * The significance of giving.
    * The systematic nature of giving.
    * The strategy of giving.
    * The submission that is shown in giving.

4.       Rejoice in God's blessing (11-12).

I Do Not Change!!!
Part 10
Malachi 3:6-7

The immutability of God means that He is unchanging in His being, perfections, purposes, and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and he acts and feels differently in His response to certain situations.

Our text declares that this immutability involves:

1.   God's character

Which involves His:

    * Perfection
    * Personhood
    * Promises
    * Plans

2.   God's covenant

The covenant with Jacob proved:

    * His faithfulness
    * Israel's faithlessness

3.   His Compassion

This compassion allows for:

    * God's redemption of humanity
    * Our return to God

"He's Coming:  Are You Ready?"
Malachi 3:1-5
Part 9

Our readiness for His coming involves:

   1. A thought that should challenge us.

His coming should challenge:

· The unbeliever to experience salvation.

· The believer to pursue sanctification.

This challenge involves:

·         A diligent examination.

·         A daily expectation.

This expectation includes:

    * Wanting.
    * Waiting.
    * Watching.

   2. A testing that should concern us.

This testing involves:

    * A confrontation by the Lord.

    * Our condition before the Lord.

Our condition will determine whether the day of His coming will result in a:

    * Grievous condemnation.

    * Glorious celebration.

Part 8
"Are you sick and tired of God?"
Or
"Is God sick and tired of you?"
Malachi 2:17

1.   God's patience was exhausted.

The patience of God:

    * Is extremely long in duration.
    * Will be eventually lost.

2.   God people were exasperating.

They believed that God:

    * Delights in people's iniquity
    * Dwells in perpetual indifference

   3. God's path involves expectation.

Our expectation includes a:

    * Coming deliverer
    * Child's discipline
    * Certain destruction
    * Christ-like direction

Broken

"Broken"
Malachi 2:10-16
Part 7

When our spiritual relationship is broken we become:

1. Unfaithful in our fellowship with others.

We are called to love one another because we share:

    * The same Father
    * The same faith

2. Unfaithful to our Father in heaven.

The Israelites unfaithfulness was evident when:

    * God's covenant of marriage was ignored

    * The people's choice in marriage allowed for idolatry

God's anger towards inter-marriage

    * Had nothing to do with race

    * It was all about religion

3.  Unfaithful to our families.

God declares that he is the sole:

    * Author of marriage

    * Authority in marriage

Real Leadership - Part B

"Real Leadership"
Malachi 2:1-9

Part 6

Our text gives 10 characteristics of leadership.

   1. First, we see five characteristics of spiritually flawed leadership.

Leadership is flawed when we:

    * Dishonor God's holiness (2-3).
    * Depart from God's way (8a).
    * Damage the spiritual lives of others (8b).
    * Desecrate the covenant God has given (8c).
    * Are despised by the people we serve (9).

When leaders are flawed they may be (2-3):

    * Rebuked.
    * Rejected.
    * Removed.

2. Second, we see five characteristics of spiritually faithful leadership.

Faithful leadership:

    * Responds to God with obedience (2).
    * Reveres God as awesome and faithful (4-5).
    * Resolves to live a holy life (6).
    * Reproves people regarding their sin (6b).
    * Represents God to others (7).

When leaders are faithful:

    * A reward is given (5).
    * A relationship is experienced (6).
    * A respect is due (7).

Are You Right With God?

Malachi 2:1-3

Part 5

"Are You Right With God?"

Failure to live a godly life may result in:

1. The removal of God's privileges.

This removal will hinder our:

    * Personal experiences.
    * Public expressions.

2.   Repercussions from God's punishment.

This punishment may include:

    * A firm rebuke.
    * A variety of far-reaching and negative results.

3. The rejection of godly purposes.

Instead of honor and blessing, there is: ·

    * Disclosed sin.
    * Disqualified service.

These three consequences can be . . .

4.   Remedied through godly practices.

These practices involve:

    * Hearing God.
    * Hungering for God.
    * Honoring God.

Giving God Your Leftovers

Malachi 1:6-14

Part 4

"Giving God Your Leftovers"

We give God our best when we:

1. Cease the pattern of living that displeases God.

God is displeased with:

    * Prideful attitudes
    * Polluted actions

2. Check to see if what you give to God is what He demands.

Two questions to ask before we give to God:

    * Would it be it accepted by our governor?
    * Does it ascribe glory to God?

If the answer is no then:

    * God is not pleased
    * We have unanswered prayer
    * God would rather close the place down

3. Commit to living a life that is dedicated to God.

This dedication involves:

    * Giving God what he deserves.
    * Giving to God what you have declared.

To God Be the Glory

Part 3

Malachi 1:6

"To God Be the Glory"

In this second message from God through Malachi we are told of:

1.    A Special Relationship

God speaks of his people as:

    * Sons
    * Servants

          As a result of this relationship God's people hold a:

    * High position
    * Holy position

2.   A Serious Rebuke

This rebuke involved a:

    * Relationship that had been dishonored
    * Revelation of God that had been despised

3.    A Sad Response

This response was a result of:

    * Hard hearts
    * Hypocritical hearts

Are You Ready? -Overview of Malachi-

Overview of Malachi
Malachi 1:1
God’s last Old Testament message to His earthly people Israel is directed to the remnant that returned from the Babylonian captivity. This remnant had totally failed during the decades after the return in their testimony for God. It is true that the Jews did no longer serve the idols as they did before the exile, but their moral condition was marked by indifference, despising of God and unbelief. Into this situation God declares His unchanging love for the people and points out their sins and their departure from His commandments (Mal. 1 – 2). But God also announces to the Jews that severe judgments will come upon them before he sends his next prophet to usher in the coming of Jesus Christ. (Mal. 3 – 4). Over the next couple months we will examine this ancient message and learn principles and commands that remain true today. The book of Malachi is truly an “Ancient Truth for Modern Times”

The Word of Victory

Famous Last words

"The Word of Victory"

John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Tetelestai= This Greek word speaks of something being finished, completed, or accomplished.

As we observe this cry from the cross we see:

1.   Completion

Christ was declaring that:

    * He had fulfilled the words foretold by the prophets.

    * He had finished the work of salvation.

2.    Conquest

            On the cross Christ gained victory over:

    * Society

    * Sin

    * Satan

3.     Commitment

This involved Christ's:

    * Obedience to the Father

The Word of Suffering

A Word of Suffering

John 19:28

John 19:28-29

    Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." [29] A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.

This cry from the cross should cause us to:

1. Realize the certainty of suffering.

2. Remain faithful to our calling to serve God.

3. Renew our commitment to Scripture.

4. Remember the work of Christ that brought salvation.

5. Recognize our own craving for sustenance.

The Word of Anguish

The Word of Anguish

Matthew 27:45; Mark 15:33-34

As we observe this cry from the cross we see:

1.  A season of darkness.

This darkness came as a result of:

    * Physical pain
    * Physiological ploys
    * A paternal purpose

2.  A sudden desertion.

The desertion of Christ teaches us about:

    * The purity of God

· The penalty for our sin

·         The perseverance of Jesus

3.  A spiritual deliverance.

    This deliverance involves:

      ·   The person of Christ.

    * The payment for sin

    · A promise to all people.

      Both:

-Sinner

-Saint

Words of a Family Man

Words of a Family Man

John 19:26-27

1. Jesus was a model son

a. Jesus was about the business of saving the world, but he was not too busy for his family.

b. The perfect man sets an example for children to honor their parents.

c. Our spiritual responsibilities do not supersede our family responsibilities

2. If Jesus had time to honor his parents then so do you.

a. No one is ever released from this sacred obligation.

b. When you can't do anything else for the people you love, you can at least tell them, "I love you."

c. No matter what you do in this life, you can hardly be considered a success if in your rapid climb to the top you neglect to care for your family.

d. If you can't honor them while they are alive, you can remember them after they die.

e. If you are unable to speak good about your parents, you can honor them by refusing to speak evil of them.

3.   A disciple's responsibility:

a.  John deserted his Savior

b. John returned to his Savior

c. John was forgiven by his Savior

Family Devotional Follow-Up:

1. In a practical sense, what does it mean to you to "honor your parents"?

2. Read Ecclesiastes 12. Why is it important to remember God when you are young?

3. Read Psalm 127. In what sense are children a "reward" from the Lord? Why is the person blessed whose "quiver" is full?

4. Do you agree that we are always called to honor our parents, even if we can't always obey them? How can this principle help us win our unbelieving parents who do not understand our faith in Christ?

5. Name three ways we can honor our parents after they have died.

The Word of Salvation

A Word of Salvation

Luke 23:42 & 43

As we observe the story

of the repentant thief we encounter:

1. The picture of all sinners.

Just like the thief:

    * We revile God.
    * We are robbers.
    * We are ruined.

2.   The path of salvation.

This path to Christ involves your:

·        Change of heart.

    * Confession of guilt.
    * Commitment to faith in Christ.

3. The proclamation of the Savior.

This proclamation regarding the afterlife:

    * Was rooted in a promise.
    * Involved a certain point in time.
    * Declared the presence of Christ.
    * Tells us of an eternal paradise.

The Word of Forgiveness

A Word of Forgiveness

Luke 23:34

1. Forgiving the unforgivable begins with prayer.
Jesus' prayer on the cross was

    * Surprising
    * Sensitive
    * Sufficient

2. Forgiving the unforgivable always involves a Pardon.

This Pardon:

    * Involves a purpose
    * Consist of an ongoing principle
    * Is a commanded practice
    * Contains power for all who need it

-For those below the cross

-For those beyond the cross

3. Forgiving the unforgivable makes way for us to experience peace.

Only through forgiveness can peace be restored:

    * With our Creator
    * With other Christians
    * In all circumstances

-No matter the event

-No matter the enemy

The Priority of Biblical Preaching

The Priority of Preaching
Part 1
Acts 2:42-47

1. Biblical preaching must be a focus and priority of every church.

Preaching was:

o Central in the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ.

o Commanded in the Great Commission.

o Continually practiced in the early church.

o Constantly encouraged in the Apostles' correspondence.

2. Biblical preaching must follow a specific pattern to be authentic.

The Apostles' teaching:

o Was rooted in the Old Testament.

o Revolved around the person and work of Christ.

o Was replete with doctrinal instruction and application.

3. Biblical preaching must remain faithful to the principles of scripture.

The Apostles' teaching was:

o       Declared as God's truth.

o Deemed worthy through God's power.

o Delineated in the New Testament.

4. Biblical preaching that is founded on the scriptures produces results.

These results take place when people desire to:

o       Hear the Word.

o       Heed the Word.

These results often include:

o       Elevated worship.

o       Empowered prayers.

o       Enriched service.

o       Expanded joy.

o       Explosive evangelism.

The Evil That We Do

Part  15

The Evil That We Do

Romans 1:28-32

This evil involves:

1. Our embracing of certain decisions that are unholy.

           These decisions involve:

    * A systematic review of God's worth
    * A stubborn rejection of God
    * A settled reaction by God
    * A sinful response by humanity

2. Our engaging in depravity that is

      unthinkable.

This depravity is seen through our

    * Entrenched attitudes
    * Elevated arrogance
    * Evil activities

         As a result we are:

    * Morally unlearned
    * Spiritually unfaithful
    * Naturally unloving
    * Continually unmerciful

Our experiencing a future destiny that

     will be unbearable.

             This destiny:

    * Comes as a result of habitual practices of sin
    * Involves continual praise of other sinners
    * Leads to an unbearable penalty for our sins

"It's Time We Get This Right" - A Study on Sanctified Sexuality

Part  13

"It's Time We Get This Right"

Romans 1:24 & 25

Sanctified sexuality comes when we:

1. Recognize the different stances people take with regard to sex:

    * Playboy's stance.
    * The prude's stance.
    * The proper stance.

2. Realize what the Bible says about sexual immorality.

Paul states that our decline into sexual immorality:

    * Reflects God's settled position towards humanity's sin.
    * Deepens when we cultivate sinful pleasures of the heart.
    * Results in shameful practices that dishonor our bodies.

3. Respond with biblical steps that will bring praise to God:

    * If you are single, remain celibate until marriage.
    * If you are married, celebrate sex with your spouse.
    * If you struggle with sexual temptation, ask God for the strength to conquer it.

The Reasons for God's Wrath #2 - The Truth Substituted

Part  12

"The Reason For God's Wrath"

Romans 1:21-23

Humanity's substitution for the truth:

1. Leads to our dismissal of God in our lives.

This dismissal involves:

    * A reckless choice
          o We did not give God glory
          o We did not show God gratitude
    * A resulting condition
          o Hollow reasoning
          o Horrible reality

2. Involves a decision to live life apart from God.

This decision led to a:

    * Foolish regression
    * False religion

3. Reminds us of our duty in this world.

Every Christian must:

·         Give God glory

    * Show God your gratitude
    * Understand the Gospel
    * Worship God and Him alone

"Wait 'til Your Father Comes Home" A Lesson on the Wrath of God

Part 10

"Wait 'til your Father Comes Home"

Romans 1:18-19

As we look at this weighty scripture, we should give attention to:

1. Contemporary preachers' fear of preaching this truth.

We must speak of this truth because:

    * The Bible proclaims it.
    * It teaches us about our greatest problem.
    * It gives us a proper view of God.
    * It gives us a passion for the gospel.

2. A proper understanding of the facts surrounding this truth.

The Bible speaks about:

    * The characteristics of this wrath.
    * The consistency of this wrath.
    * The categories of this wrath.
    * The course of this wrath.

3. The primary focus of this wrath.

God's wrath is being revealed because of humanity's:

    * Ungodliness
    * Unrighteousness
    * Unwillingness

4. The perfect formula for turning away this wrath.

This biblical formula involves:

    * Examining your life.
    * Making every effort to know God.

Allowing your life to be an evidence of God's grace.

The Marks of Spiritual Maturity

Part 8

"The Mark Of Spiritual Maturity"

Romans 1:14-16
Mark #1

I am concerned about the people of the world.

My concern:

    * Must be ever-present.
    * Can't be for the elite alone.
    * Isn't based on education.
    * Must be for all ethnic groups.

Mark #2

I am committed to proclaim the gospel to the world.

My commitment involves:

    * Knowing the part I play.
    * Knowing the place I am to serve.
    * Knowing the message I am to preach.

Mark #3

I am confident in what the gospel has promised.

The gospel promises to:

    * Be powerful.
    * Accomplish God's purposes.
    * To be given plentifully.
    * According to God's plan.

Are You Seeing Results?

Part 5

"Are you seeing results?"

Romans 1:5-7

A true and growing Christianity is seen in its results.
Every growing Christian must:

1. Remember the purpose of our deliverance.

The purpose for our deliverance involves:

    * God receiving glory
    * Humanity receiving grace
    * God giving gifts

2. Respond with a passion to declare the gospel.

This declaration must be:

    * Shared with all people
    * Shared properly

3. Recognize the privileges that bring forth our delight.

Our delight comes because:

    * We belong to God
    * We are beloved by God
    * We become saints
    * We are showered with His blessings

Are You Attached to the Gospel?

Part  4

"Are You Attached To the Gospel?"

Romans 1:2-4

Our attachment to the gospel involves answering 3 questions:

   1.

      Are you in awe of the promise of the gospel?

When we explore the scripture we see:

   1.

          *

            The continuity of the gospel.
          *

            The consistency of the gospel.
          *

            The character of the gospel.
   2.

      Are you attached to the person of the gospel?

Jesus is the person of the gospel based on:

·         Prophecy

·         His position

·         His pedigree

Jesus had the right pedigree from a

    *

      Human perspective
    *

      Heavenly perspective

3. Are you aware of your position with regard to the gospel?

This awareness of Christ's Lordship should involve your:

    *

      Pursuits
    *

      Pleasures
    *

      Possessions
    *

      Profession
    *

      Proclamation
    *

      Planet
    *

      Place of worship

God's Breaking News for a Broken World

Part 3

Gods Breaking News To a Broken World

Romans 1:1

This Breaking News:

1. Comes to a world seduced by sin.

This seduction is seen in:

    * The longing of humanity
    * The lust we long to gratify
    * The lost condition we face

2. Connects us to the only source of salvation.

This news of salvation involves:

    * A positive declaration
    * Plenty of descriptions
    * Powerful dimensions

3. Converts the sinner through a proper response to the Savior.

There are 4 responses we can have to the good news:

    * Antagonistic
    * Apathetic
    * Attracted
    * Attached

What is a Christian

Part 2:

What Is a Christian?

Romans 1:1

A Christian is one:

1. Who serves the Master in Heaven.

This service should remind us about our:

    * Partnership
    * Purpose
    * Priority

2. Who is sent on a mission as a herald.

This mission involves:

    * God calling us
    * God changing us
    * God commissioning us

3. Who is set apart to proclaim a message of hope.

Our being set apart:

    * Involves the past
    * Is permanent
    * Involves certain parameters

Field of Dreams

Redeeming Ruth
Part 5
"Field of Dreams"
Ruth 2:4-17

In God's field of dreams we find:

1.   A place of acceptance.

This acceptance is seen in:

    * God- honoring fellowship (4)
    * The grace extended to foreigners (5-6a.)

2.   A place of access.

This access involves:

    * Direction (8)
    * Protection (9a.)
    * Satisfaction (9b.)
    * Communion (14)

3.   A place of amazement.

The grace of God:

    * Should overwhelm us (10)
    * It validates our obedience (11-12)
    * Produces an outpouring (13)
    * Allows for opportunity of service (14-16)

Redeeming Ruth
Embracing the Romance of Redemption
Part 2
"The Three Amigas"
Ruth 1:7-18

1. Are you one who is struggling with defeat?

In Naomi we see the:

    * Cause of our defeat
    * Complete nature of our defeat
    * Consequences of our defeat

2. Are you one who is stepping towards a departure?

Orpah's departure allowed a return to her

    * Relatives
    * Religion
    * Reality

3. Are you one who is serious about your devotion?

Ruth's decision begs the question:

    * Who are you following?
    * What level of faith do you possess?
    * How firm is your devotion to Christ?

Redeeming Ruth
Embracing the Romance of Redemption
Part 1
"What do you want on your tombstone?"
Ruth 1:1-6

Your tombstone will speak of:

1. How you live amidst dreadful circumstances.

Ruth begins in a time of a

    * Moral famine
    * Material famine

These famines come as a result of:

    * Apathy
    * Apostasy
    * Anarchy

2. The decisions you make at the crossroads of life.

Elimelech:

    * Left a promised land
    * Lived and lingered in a polluted land

3. Your response to devastating calamities.

What is your response to:

    * Disease
    * Death
    * Defeat

4. The results of your difficult choices.

Our choices should involve:

    * Drawing near to God
    * Understanding what God is doing
    * Taking inventory of past decisions

Deliverance from Our Shame

"Deliverance from Our Shame"
Part 4
John 21:1-23

1. Shame is a result of our failures.

Through the life of Peter we see:

    * The place of failure
    * The pain of failure
    * The price of failure

     Our failure involves our:

    * Choices
    * Companions
    * Consequences

2. Shame is removed through the words of a faithful friend.

Jesus:

    * Found him
    * Fed him
    * Freed him

3. Shame is reversed through an obedient future.

This reversal involves a life of:

    * Service

Deliverance from Our Second Guessing

Part 3
"Deliverance from Our Second-guessing"
John 20:19-31

Deliverance from second-guessing the claims of Jesus demands that we:

1. DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH A DISCIPLE WHO DOUBTED.

THOMAS WAS:

    * A FISHERMAN (John 21:1-3)
    * A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST (Luke 6:13-16)
    * FOCUSED ON FINDING ANSWERS (John 14:5)

2. DEFEND AGAINST THE RISKS SURROUNDING THE DOWNWARD OF SPIRAL DOUBT.

DOUBT LEADS US DOWN THE PATH OF:

    * DESERTION (v.19)
    * DELAY (v. 24)
    * DENIAL (v.25a)
    * DEMAND (v.25b)

3. DEEPEN OUR RESOLVE TO DISARM THE DOUBTS OF LIFE.

DOUBT IS DISARMED BY:

    * DRAWING CLOSE TO JESUS (v.26)

    * BELIEVING THE DEMONSTRATIONS GIVEN TO US. (v. 27)

    * DECLARING OUR ALLEGIANCE TO GOD. (vv. 28-29)

    * DEVOTING OURSELVES TO THE WORD OF GOD. (vv. 30-31)

Part 2
"Deliverance from our sin"
John 20:1-18

Our deliverance from sin:

1. Requires finding success in overcoming great obstacles.

     The resurrection overcomes our:

    * Suffering
    * Sorrow
    * Shame
    * Sin

2. Is realized through a startling observation.

                  Three different observations are seen:

    * Peter observes with curiosity
    * John observes carefully
    * Mary observes completely

3. Results in sharing with others.

                  Our sharing should include:

    * The resurrection of Christ
    * Our spiritual reversal

Jesus: The Answer to Our Death

God in 3-D
Part 32
John 11
Jesus: The answer to our death

Our answer to death is found in:

1.   The passion of Christ

This passion:

    * Present in our problems
    * Personal
    * Powerful

2.   The plans of Christ

We must remember that Christ's plans:

Always demonstrates the glory of god

    * May involve a delay
    * Are used to deepen our faith
    * Are clearly declared

3.   The power of Christ

This power brings

    * Life
    * Liberty
    * Light

This miracle is possible no matter the:

    * Obstacle
    * Odor

God's Answer to Our Desires

God in 3-D
Part 29
Jesus: The answer to our desire
John 6:1-15

We can find the fulfillment and contentment in Jesus because:

1. There is no problem too big for Jesus to solve.

When we face times of obstacles we must remember that:

    * Jesus always recognizes the problem
    * The solution requires us to exhibit faith
    * Our response will fall short without faith

2. There is no person too small to serve Jesus.

    * We are called to serve no matter the size of the gift

    * Our service to God runs parallel with the sacrifice of the giver.

    * Our service to God may be second-guessed by others.

If we desire to be used by God we must:

    * Transfer all that we have to Jesus
    * Allow Jesus to transform it for his glory

3. There is no other provision that results in such a great satisfaction.

This provision that comes from Christ:

    * Strengthens the faltering
    * Stuffs the famished
    * Supplies His followers

God's Answer to Our Disappointment

God in 3-D
Part 28
"God's answer to our disappointment"
John 2:1-11

The answer to our disappointment is found by:

1. Recognizing the sources of our disappointment.

Disappointment is:

The failure to satisfy hopes and expectations

Or

The state of being unsatisfied

Our disappointment involves the:

    * Family
    * Finances
    * Physical
    * Emotional
    * Spiritual

   2. Remembering a biblical situation of joy that turned to disappointment.

    * The setting
    * The significance
    * The sign

This miracle shows us that Jesus is able to:

    * Restore order
    * Release nature
    * Reverse failure

3. Responding with biblical steps that allow for joy to be restored.

The bible prescribes the following steps:

    * Ask Jesus to attend all occasions of your life
    * Listen to the advice of Jesus
    * Tap into the abundance that only comes from Christ
